Beyond NDSU: Interpersonal Relationships Made Entirely Anew

Here it comes: a fresh beginning! The start to a new school year is always exciting in several thrilling and anxiety-inducing ways. Opportunities are made apparent through new classes and new faces bring the beginning of interactions with people you were previously unfamiliar with. All of this is undeniably true for those who took the leap of studying abroad somewhere foreign. As an NDSU study abroad student of upper standing, this experience of starting anew and far from home reminds me very much of my time beginning college as a freshman, especially in the realm of making connections. My second time around has proven to strengthen my understanding of the budding nature of new interpersonal relationships and the best ways to open those doors.

Take the first step to beginning a conversation and actively work to input yourself into situations.strongThis is a difficult one for many, even more so for those who find themselves to be more introverted. As someone who found themselves in that place as a freshman, I can understand the fear. I have also learned that, more likely than not, people will appreciate effort and are often willing to return and maintain a conversation, especially when you initiated it. Additionally, striking up a conversation about confusion or nervousness is a good way to make an introductory link. Most people are in a similar boat and will often reciprocate such feelings. Not only do you end up feeling less alone, but you create an initial connection that proves as a gateway to learning more about each other’s characters. Finally, speaking up and giving that person the compliments we so often bite our tongues on can go a long way. When others are looking for people to speak with and grow close to, a compliment can spark an incredible opportunity for continued conversation.

You often begin alone, so don’t let that singular status hold you back from doing.strongOne thing many people forget is that so much of forming relationships with others comes from valuing yourself and knowing what you need. Therefore, even if you don’t have the people to do the activities you wish to, you can’t let that stop you. You owe it to yourself and your own growth to engage in the hobbies and experiences you know you will enjoy. One of the bravest things you can do is do it alone. Additionally, it is likely that you may end up meeting someone fantastic along your solo journey. But, even if that doesn’t occur, you still get to feel the deep satisfaction of your own self-fulfillment, which is just as important as forming social relationships.

Be open and let things flow — good things take time. It is much easier to say that valuable, deep relationships take time when that is something you desire and want to happen right away, but the reality is, new places take time to navigate, which also includes the people within that new environment. Additionally, not everyone is meant to be a long-term friend; some people are there for just one conversation. While this can be frustrating, it’s normal. One of the best things you can learn is to enjoy the moment and let it be what it was. Ultimately, it takes time to get to know someone and it’s not something you can rush if you want it to last. While our fast-paced world makes it agonizing to move slowly, many good interpersonal relationships truly do only grow with time. So, let things breathe. It’s not easy when we’ve been conditioned otherwise, but it’s necessary.

Ultimately, every interaction holds something to gain. The understanding of our relations to others is a lifelong endeavor that will always have something to teach you. Connection is so often sought after, so as long as the effort is put forth, you will find value in practically all the connections you make.
