Stretching into the Semester with Pilates
Grace JacksonLooking for a fun and convenient workout class? The NDSU Wellness Center has got you covered! Let's talk about Pilates.
Pilates comes in different forms, with mat Pilates being one of the most common. Unlike reformer Pilates, which uses a specialized machine, springs, straps and a sliding platform, mat Pilates is performed on a mat and primarily uses body weight and small equipment like a block or band for resistance. The Walman Wellness Center at NDSU offers mat Pilates, making it an accessible option for students who want to try Pilates without the access reformer machine.
With five different Pilates class times and three different instructors, students have plenty of opportunities to find a class that works for them. The classes are included and covered by NDSU student fees, so students do not need to pay an additional fee to participate!
The classes have been a hit so far this semester, with some reaching the maximum capacity of 50 people. After trying the Pilates classes myself, I can see why the classes have become so popular. The workouts were challenging without feeling overwhelming. However, I quickly realized how difficult side planking can be! The instructors were easy to follow, and the music played during the classes was also a highlight. Each instructor has a wide variety of music to choose from, which keeps the classes fun and exciting.
Taylor Lawrence, a Pilates instructor who teaches the 12:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday classes, said the community built within the classes is one of her favorite parts of teaching. Lawrence said she usually sees between 25 and 40 participants in her classes each week.
“As an instructor, it is so rewarding to guide people through the workout and see their confidence and strength grow over time,” Lawrence said. "I love creating a space where everyone feels encouraged to push themselves, celebrate their progress, and most importantly, enjoy movement.”
Grace Jackson, who teaches the 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday classes, said one of her favorite parts of teaching is creating the class playlist.
“My favorite part about teaching Pilates is probably that I get to build the playlist for the class. I think it’s really fun to sync the playlist for the exercises.” Jackson also brings a unique addition to her classes through a Red Bull partnership, giving students another reason to stop by her evening classes.
Pilates classes are offered five times throughout the week at the Wellness Center. Students can attend Mondays at 12:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 7:30 a.m.
With several times to choose from, no additional cost for NDSU students and a welcoming environment, Pilates can be an easy way to add movement to a busy college schedule. Whether students are new to Pilates or already familiar with the workout, NDSU’s wellness center offers an opportunity to get active, have some fun and potentially discover a new favorite class and hobby!
