Soccer Looks Ahead to Summit League Play After Florida Atlantic Draw

The Bison women’s soccer team entered this past Thursday sitting at 2-3-3 with just one out of conference game to go. That non-conference game would be against Florida Atlantic.

The Bison would look to build their momentum heading into conference play as they try to make a push for a Summit League title. They also would be able to get their record evened up at 3-3-3.

It would be an 8 p.m. start time at Dacotah Field under the lights in North Fargo, and it’d be an uneventful first 43 minutes. FAU’s Olivia Surprenant would break the shutout in the 44th minute with an unassisted goal to make it 1-0.

That would be the score heading into halftime, and the Bison would have to regroup in the second half. They wouldn’t make any noise until the 90th minute.

With just 54 seconds remaining, Amaya Garrett would score a goal assisted by Isable Garcia to tie things up at one. Nobody would get a goal in those final seconds, which resulted in another tie for this Bison team.

NDSU’s record would go to 2-3-4 to wrap up non-conference play. 27 total shots occurred in this game, and 15 of them were on goal. NDSU committed five of the 11 fouls in this game.

Now, as NDSU looks ahead to Summit League play, they will have a bye week in a sense, as they don’t play again until September 24th. That game will be against the rivals up north in the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.

Three days later, NDSU will return to play the Coyotes of South Dakota for the home conference opener at Dacotah Field. Looking around the Summit League, South Dakota State is leading the way with a 5-2-1 overall record.

The Bison play the Jacks at home on Oct. 3, along with traveling down to Brookings on Nov. 1 for the regular-season finale. Sitting behind them are North Dakota and South Dakota.

NDSU sits in fourth place in overall record, but once conference games get going, the standings will result from conference game results. Looking at the Summit League stats, NDSU’s Morgan Russman leads the conference in shots and shots on goal.

She also sits in third place in goals behind Brianna Castleberry of Oral Roberts and Jenna Maloy of South Dakota State. The 2024 Summit League offensive player of the year is well on her way to another all-conference season in 2026.
