Founded in 1967, the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communications.

The club aims to help enhance students’ education, broaden their professional network and help launch future careers in the communications industry. PRSSA has chapters across the country, including one at North Dakota State University, where students can gain hands-on experience and make valuable connections before entering the workforce.

Although the club is geared towards students majoring in communication-related fields such as public relations, journalism, advertising and strategic communication, any student at North Dakota State University is welcome to join.

PRSSA provides professional development opportunities tailored specifically for college students who want to build their resumes and explore career paths in communications.

The national PRSSA organization advocates for rigorous academic standards in public relations education while promoting ethical communication practices and diversity within the profession. These values help students understand the responsibilities that come with working in the media and public relations. Members are encouraged to think critically about how different communication impacts a variety of audiences and how professionals can maintain their credibility in their work.

At North Dakota State University, PRSSA hosts a variety of events throughout the academic year where students gain real-world experience. The organization frequently invites guest speakers from local businesses, media organizations and communication agencies to share advice about internships, job opportunities and industry trends. The club also allows members to attend the PR North conference in Minneapolis to gain hands-on experience from professionals working in the field.

The club also organizes field trips and networking events that help students gain connections on campus.

Earlier this semester, NDSU’s PRSSA partnered with the university’s photo club to host a professional headshot event for students. During the event, students updated their LinkedIn profiles with professional photos that can be used for internships, job applications and personal branding.

According to PRSSA President Jenna Schwindt, being involved in the organization has played an important role in preparing her for her future career in communications. “Being part of PRSSA has been very helpful for me as a communication major,” she said. “Since I want to work in public relations in the future, PRSSA has been a great way to build my personal network and gain industry knowledge from experienced individuals.”

Schwindt said she joined the organization as a freshman and was excited when the opportunity to become president became available. “This role is an important step toward my future career goals,” she said. Her experience reflects how PRSSA helps students grow as leaders while preparing for careers in communications.

Overall, PRSSA gives students on campus valuable opportunities to grow professionally, develop leadership skills and network with others who share similar career interests. For students interested in communications, public relations or marketing opportunities, PRSSA can be an important stepping stone toward future success. Students can join the club through the My NDSU portal.
