‘Black Future ’88’ may have a retro feel, but there are plenty of features that propel it into the future.

Taking a step into the late eighties, “Black Future ’88” by SUPERSCARYSNAKES comes out Nov. 21, for PCs and Nintendo Switch. The world is still reeling from a nuclear apocalypse and since the earth is surrounded by eternal darkness, the survivors have stopped tracking time. Keeping the date stuck eternally in 1988.

This destruction of the earth was created by a man known as Duncan. Duncan sits inside his architectural masterpiece, the Tower.

As one of the last survivors, your goal is to climb his tower and kill him. While working towards your goal, you will be assaulted by the tower’s own defenses, homicidal A.I. and Duncan’s loyal minions.

“Black Future ‘88” is a synth-punk, rogue-like, 2D action shooter that uses platforming as its movement mechanic. The tower is procedurally generated each time it is climbed; meaning no two runs are the same and that you cannot expect the next level to be what you last played on.

The rapidity of the gameplay along with the changing levels means that quick reaction times and changing strategies are the only way to reach Duncan and get some modicum of revenge.

“Black Future ‘88” may be set in the perpetual eighties with an arcade kind-of-feel, but it has many features that bring it far into the future.

Ascending death

As you travel upwards through the aforementioned random tower, you will have to wade through a constant onslaught of death by hot flames, precise laser beams or bloody slashes.

Dystopian cyberpunk

“Black Future ‘88” contains five distinct zones to battle your way through with its unique “synth-punk world”.

It’s like Monopoly

Ruin friendships by testing wit and reflexes in local co-op play to experience a unique kind of rogue-like co-op.

 Survive with boosts and curses

In order to survive the Tower, you must evolve. Among other things, your own heart is trying to kill you. Strategically choose between thirty different buffs and curses to make it to the next stage.

Tons of guns

A unique array of fifty different weapons to use. Each with their own effects, advantages and disadvantages.

Wrap-up

With a bouncy analog-synth soundtrack and brutal combat, “Black Future ‘88” looks to be an action-packed adventure filled with explosions, robots and quick gameplay mechanics.

If you are into games with a classic arcade feel but also have a new-age vibe to them, then “Black Future ‘88” is for you.
