Fresh off of spring break, the NDSU Running Club is back for the remainder of the semester. Led by club president Matthew Evans, a double major in computer science and statistics, the NDSU Running Club serves as an outlet for runners in the NDSU community.
Back on March 4, the club held its first meeting of the season at its usual location behind the Wellness Center. Students returned this past Thursday, following spring break, for their second meeting. The meeting schedule is undulating as plans to consolidate to a consistent meeting time are in the works.
As its name suggests, the club aims to unite “anyone who likes to run,” being promoted as a healthy and safe way to meet like-minded individuals who share a passion for running. Members gather once a week to run one, three or five miles, occasionally opting to meet by the river for some trail running. With several different running distances and speeds to choose from each practice, the club is open to all skill and fitness levels.
Attendance hovers around 15 active members, though this number varies depending on weather conditions and student availability.
Club History
Since 2020, the group has met weekly, running outdoors whenever conditions allow, marking spring 2026 its 13th consecutive semester. Founded by Colin Geyer in the spring of that year, the club started with one meeting a week, built around a one or three-mile run. With time, the club has expanded its event opportunities and added another distance option.
The organization has changed leadership on a few occasions; the current president shared his reason for taking up the role, “I was an active member of the club who enjoyed running, and the previous club leadership all graduated, so I decided to step up to lead the club.” Originally from Grand Forks, club president Evans competed in cross country and track in high school. Evans brought his passion with him, as his club helps maintain a running community here on campus.
In addition to the weekly meetings, members of the club participated in the Fargo Mini Marathon back in October. This Mini Marathon was an event which allowed runners to complete a 5K, 10K or half marathon along Fargo’s Red River. The NDSU Running Club’s weekly practices helped members train for these races, aiding members in achieving their fitness goals. Events like this highlight the club’s goal of being an option for all levels of experience.
Club Purpose
When asked about the purpose of the club, Evans pointed out the accountability it creates: “It benefits the NDSU community to have a structured environment where people who enjoy running can connect with other people who enjoy running instead of just training on their own.” Additionally, Evans believes the club is a great opportunity to meet new people.
For students interested in running, the organization offers a way to connect with others who share that interest. For more information on the NDSU Running Club, Evans recommends joining the group on myNDSU to get emails about future meetings.
