Being scared is not fun, it’s terrifying
By far, Halloween has the biggest range of emotions of any holiday. There are moments of fun, moments of being silly and many encounters with the spooky and scary. One large Halloween fan-based event involves going to haunted houses.
You are likely in the range of a haunted house almost anywhere you are. I, for one, am not a fan of haunted houses. I used to be the child who really enjoyed making fun of scary movies and seemed to have no fear whatsoever.
Now, as a young adult, I for some reason am spooked super easily. Any situation where I have to purposefully put myself into a scary situation is not ideal.
Two years ago, I went to the Trail of Terror in Shakopee, MN. This is one of the largest Terror events in the midwest. If you enjoy being spooked, I would highly recommend this place. However, it had me in tears the whole time.
One of the main rules in haunted houses is that you cannot touch the workers, but for most people, their natural reaction to being scared is to fight back. I succumbed to this reaction when I got to the point of being scared too much. I accidentally punched one of the workers.
Haunted houses are one of the scariest parts of Halloween by far. Being chased by chainsaws and seeing your nightmares comes to life is literally death to me.
I do not know how anyone can truly enjoy the adrenaline rush that accompanies being put in this death-like situations. Do not get me wrong, I love a good adrenaline rush, roller-coasters and other things meant to elicit excitement are great. However, being made to feel as if I might be killed is definitely not ideal.
There are many other things about haunted houses that I personally do not enjoy. One thing is the masks many workers and trick-or-treaters choose to wear. Masks seem to be a perfectly good excuse for something bad to happen. I do like not being able to recognize someone.
Especially if people in masks are interacting with people for the purpose of scaring them, they can be a huge sign to take caution. Masks take away personal responsibility and make people feel like they can do anything.
While people working in these haunted houses usually have to wear masks, you will not see me interacting with these people. You all have fun scaring yourselves, but I think I will sit out on these Halloween festivities this year.
