Bigger and flashier than ever before, the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre didn’t hold back for its 70th season.

The 2016-17 season, announced this past week, is planning some smash hits to excite current patrons and entice some new ones.

On the main stage, the shows are:

Treasure Island October 7-9, 13-16

Stephen King’s The Shining October 27-30

White Christmas December 8-11, 6-18

Other Desert Cities January 27-29, February 2-4

Billy Elliot May 4-7, 11-14

In the smaller studio, the theatre plans on showing smaller and more contemporary shows:

Becky Shaw August 3-5

Almost Main April 6-8

Finally, Theatre for Young Audiences in partnership with MSUM Theater is showing “A Year with Frog and Toad.” Usually, the FMCT only does matinees for local schools, but this year it has public performances at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Feb. 25 and March 4.

This is the first season new artistic director Kody Jones has put together. He decided on familiar titles to attract those who have never been interested in theater before, all while staying true to the artistic mission and promotion of the theatre’s growth.

Especially with the 70th anniversary of the Stage, Jones wanted this season to be ambitious.

“I really wanted to honor our past and history by doing something new for our patrons who have always been with us,” he said.

“Billy Elliot” is expected to be the biggest production ever done at the Stage. Stephen King’s “The Shining” is not only new to the FMCT but also to theater; the stage adaptation is only two years old.

“We wanted to do something really big, fun and flashy to get the community excited about the great stuff that’s coming to the Stage and will continue to come,” Jones said.
