Wrestling falls to Oregon State; Hosts Bison Open

North Dakota State started the second week of the 2024-2025 season with their home opener. The Bison hosted the Oregon State Beavers Friday night, where they would lose 35-6. NDSU started the meet off right with 32nd nationally ranked Gavin Drexler defeating OSU’s Victor Jacinto in the 149 class. North Dakota State’s Boeden Greenely would lose by tech fall to nationally ranked Ethan Stiles, who is 33rd in the 157 class.

The Beavers extended their lead to 11-3 with Kekana Fouret’s win via fall over Brendan Howes in the 165 class. 33rd nationally ranked 174 class, Sean Harman took down NDSU’s Max Magayna with a major decision of 19-6. Aidan Brenot, who is ranked 31st for the 197 class, lost in a 9-6 decision to OSU’s TJ McDonell. 

Trey Munoz won via a tech fall over the Bison’s Aiden Hight. Oregon State’s Brett Mower would raise the Beavers’ lead to 27-3 with a major decision win over Shilo Jones. The Bison’s Tristian Daughterey fell in a 7-0 decision to Maximo Renteria. North Dakota State finally got back in the win column with Kyle Burwick’s win over Damion Elliott with a 10-7 decision. The final match Friday night was Gideon Cole’s loss at 133 to Nash Singleton, with a 17-2 tech fall.

Rebounding from the Friday night disaster, the Bison hosted the Bison Open. NDSU sent 22 wrestlers into the home tournament. Gavin Drexler would claim the herd’s first title of the morning for the 149 class with a 6-5 opening win via decision, then two tech falls to claim the title. The second NDSU title claimed was by Daniel Magayna at 174. Magayna claimed three victories with two major decisions and a 16-0 tech fall to claim his title. 

North Dakota State had three competitors in the 125 class, with Ezekiel Witt going 1-2, winning his third match by tech fall. Tristian Daughtery won his first two matches with a 9-0 major decision and a forfeit by teammate Kody Tanimoto. Tanimoto would lose all three of his other matches to finish 0-4. To start off the 133 class, Sean O’Brien would drop his first match to SDSU rival Derrick Cardinal 16-1 via tech fall. O’Brien lost to teammate Peyton Moore, who also lost to Cardinal. Gideon Cole would be the sole 141 wrestler going 0-4 in his matches with three major decisions and one tech fall. 

Gabriel Schumm claimed second at 157 with two wins via fall and a major decision win over teammate Clay Radenz. Radenz went 0-4 in his matches with three losses by fall before losing to Schumm. Boeden Greenley went 2-2 in the 165 class with two wins over teammates Brendan Howes via sudden victory and Tyler Secoy via an 8-4 decision.

Howes picked up two wins in his four matches with a win via major decision against SDSU rival Ryan Dolezal 8-0 and a 9-2 decision over teammate Dante Hutchings. Hutchings would also pick up a win against Dolezal with a 10-1 major decision. Hutchings’s second win was over teammate Luke Barker. Barker would drop his only other match in a 17-2 tech fall to SDSU’s Drake Rhodes. Finally, to wrap up the 165 class, Tyler Secoy would lose both his matches, one via fall and the other by decision to his teammate.

In the 174 class, NDSU sent four wrestlers, with Daniel Magayna claiming first place. Behind him was Devin Wasley, who went 2-1 with two victories via major decision. Alex Kowalchyk and Barrett Schneck both went 0-2 in their matches. For 197, NDSU sent two wrestlers, Michael Baker and Adam Cherne, who would both go 0-3 in their matches.

In the final weight class of 285, the Bison claimed second place with Andrew Blackburn-Forst going 1-1 with his win over teammate Shilo Jones. Jones would finish the open 0-2 with losses by major decision and sudden victory. 

North Dakota State wrestling will be back in action next Sunday the 17th at the Daktronics Open, hosted by rival school South Dakota State.
