Last Monday and Tuesday, the NDSU Men’s Golf team returned to the East Coast to compete in the Doc Glimmler Red & Black tournament hosted by St. John’s University. The two-day, three-round tournament was held on Monday the 16th, and Tuesday the 17th. St. John’s hosted the tournament honoring their former golf coach at Bethpage State Park-Red course on day one and the Black course on day two in Farmingdale, New York.
The Bison finished the season’s second tournament in third place out of 12 participating teams. Long Island University took the top step in Farmingdale with a team score of 859 (+15). Host school St. John’s grabbed silver with a score of 864 (+20). NDSU would fall just one stroke behind, opening the season with back-to-back second-place finishes, as the Bison shot 865 (+21) as a team to grab third place.
Round One
The first round in Farmingdale would be an early sign for The Bison as they finished the early morning round in third with a stroke count of 281 (+1). Josh Galvin would be NDSU’s lead man in the first round, with a stroke count of 68 (-2). His twelve pars and four birdies led to his successful morning. Following behind Galvin were Sean Moore and Rylin Petry, who would both shoot even at 70. They would both shoot four birdies and ten pars. Ian Simonich shot a 73(+3); he had thirteen pars and one birdie. The final Bison, Jake Skarperud, would shoot a 76 (+6) to wrap up the early morning round. He would shoot eight pars and three birdies. It was a great opening round for North Dakota State as they continued to show consistency as a team with their combined 53 pars.
Round Two
The second round in Farmingdale would be NDSU’s best showing of the whole tournament. North Dakota State would 277 (-3) in the afternoon window. This strong second wind would see the Bison finish even on the opening day. Leading the way in the afternoon was Jake Skarperud, who had a tremendous bounce-back performance from his early morning struggles. He would shoot 67 (-3), and his 15 pars and three birdies would significantly stamp Skarperud’s fantastic performance. Following behind him was Rylin Petry with a 68 (-2); Petry also improved on his performance from the early morning. He would shoot four birdies and twelve pars. Sean Moore, Ian Simonich, and Josh Galvin would all finish the first day with a 71 (+1). Moore would end the day with three birdies and eleven pars, Simonich with 17 pars, with his only miss-step being a bogey on a par-four. Finally, Galvin would finish his intense day with three birdies and eleven pars—another fantastic showing from all five golfers on the team. The Bison combined 66 pars in the second round for a total of 119 pars in just the first day. Consistency was essential to the fantastic opening day for The Bison in New York.
Day Two
On the second day of the Doc Glimmler Red & Black tournament, the course would shift from the Red Course on day 1 to the Black course. Even with the course change, NDSU would stay consistent with a fourth-place finish in the single round held on day two. The Bison finished with a 307 (+23). St. Johns would end the day on top, taking the top step by just one stroke over Long Island. The one stroke that secured the Red Storms’ day two victory would also push them into second, leaving the Bison in third. NDSU’s top performer was, once again, Jake Skarperud. He would shoot a 74 (+3), placing him tied for 5th place on day two. He had eleven pars and two birdies in the final 18 in Farmingdale. Sean Moore was a single stroke behind him with his 75 (+4). Moore’s nine pars and three birdies would be the reason he finished as the highest-ranking Bison in the tournament, which was a fantastic performance from a true freshman. Ian Simonich would finish the tournament with a 78 (+7), with two birdies and ten pars in the final frame. Rylin Petry would struggle in the final 18 with a stroke count of 80 (+9), an unusual performance from Petry. He was named the Summit League peak Men’s Golfer for his performance in the opening Red Bandanna Invitational. Petry would have ten pars in the closing frame. Finally, Josh Galvin would close it for NDSU with an 81 (+10). Galvin had seven pars and one birdie in his last 18.
NDSU’s second trip to New York was another successful tournament. The Bison continued to show consistency throughout the tournaments, finishing with 166 pars and 34 birdies over the two days. The final standings for the North Dakota State men’s Golf team were as follows:
