The North Dakota State Track and Field teams dominated at the Shelly Ellig indoor facility on Saturday, January 13. The Bison hosted their annual Bison Cup meet, previously the Bison men’s and women’s teams have won nine over the last five seasons. Due to weather conditions, the meet held fewer teams than usual. North Dakota State hosted Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University.
The men’s weight throw was the first event to kick off the Bison Cup. NDSU’s Kaden Pastian took first with a throw of 19.47m. Pastian also went on to win the shot put event with a mark of 17.58m. The women also won the event, Merrideth Spiers put up a mark of 18.81m to take first. Senior Koate Deebom won both the men’s long jump and triple jump. In the long jump, he finished with a mark of 7.02m and 14.09m in the triple jump.
The first running event on the track was the 60m Hurdle Preliminaries. From the preliminaries, seven Bison women advanced to the finals. Salmata Korgho won this event for the team with a time of 8.44 and set a new meet record. Blake Nyenati tied his school record time of 7.90 in the preliminary 60m Hurdles race in the men’s division. The 60m Hurdles final ended with a first-place finish from NDSU’s Logan Mathieu.
In the 60m, Kendra Kelley won the event and broke her previous record with a time of 7.43. Freshman Anika Larson was runner-up to Kelley in the event and ran a 7.53 which put her 4th-fastest in NDSU history. Later, another record was broken by the women’s team. Senior Nell Graham won the event and broke the 600m school record in 1:29.91.
The last race of the day was the 4x400m Relay. Both the men and women took this event. The women’s relay included Kendra Kelley, Angel Pratt, Bailee Dierks, and Nell Graham. They won the event with a time of 3:56.64. Cullen Curl, Carter Eide, Khamarly Holmes, and Isaac Huntington made up the winning relay team with a time of 3:23.00.
NDSU’s women’s team won with 225 points, second place had 47. On the men’s side, they won with 145 points, and the second-place finisher had 59.
The Bison will go on to compete at SDSU’s Jim Emmerich Invitational later this week on January 20 in Brookings, SD.
