National Retro Day

At some point, has everyone believed they were born in the wrong era? Good news for us, we have all the resources we need to look back and enjoy what the previous years have given us.

National Retro Day is Feb. 27, which is a great time to remember times past–whether you were alive at that time period or not–and just appreciate the decades gone by.

While we can look back and see how some things were harder or not-so-perfect, we can also appreciate how far we’ve come. Our past shaped our future, which is something we should remember, especially on this holiday.

We can see the pop culture of the past—everything from the rock ‘n roll 1950s to the boy bands of the 1990s. We see fashion evolve from bell-bottom jeans to leisure suits to low-waisted pants. From the black-and-white classics of the Golden Age of Television to the Brat Pack. Phonographs, record players, stereos, radios, cassettes, Walkmans, CD players and the iPod Nano. Take a look around your space and see what retro you find. Maybe you own a peace symbol from the 1960s or a pair of jelly shoes. You might try out an old movie you haven’t seen before, or play some music from a different decade.

Our past shapes our future, which is something we should remember, especially on this holiday.

When Hermelinda A. Aguilar and Robert A. Duran founded National Retro Day back in 2018, their goal was to bring people back to the times before the internet and social media were a part of everyday use. Not to say that these are bad things, but that reflecting on the simpler times of the past can help us gain appreciation for where we are today.

National Retro Day isn’t hard to celebrate, so try something old on Feb. 27. Listen to an old album, shop some retro clothes at local thrift stores or check out an old-time favorite movie or TV show. There’s no end to the possibilities!
