Four movies that you need to see before the end of the year
The late fall and early winter months are the busiest time of the year for the movie industry. Everyone is vying for a place in awards season – and what better way to leave a lasting memory on audiences than by premiering your movie at the very end of the year?
It’s a great time to be an avid moviegoer, but it’s also a somewhat stressful time as well. There are so many good movies coming out it’s difficult to decide which movies you should spend time and money on.
This list of top four must-see movies coming out this fall should help you navigate cinema’s most hectic season.
‘AD ASTRA’
Directed by James Gray
Starring Brad Pitt
Sci-fi space thrillers have been all-the-rage over the last decade. From “Gravity” to “Interstellar” to “The Martian”, there has been a myriad of space adventures succeeding at the box office during award season.
“Ad Astra” is the newest take on the ever-evolving genre and comes into box offices with high expectations.
Why should you see it?
Brad Pitt was already outstanding in one movie this year (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), so why can’t he be twice as nice?
Pitt has proven time and time again that he is on a level above everyone else in the industry, and there should be no reason why he doesn’t prove that in “Ad Astra”.
Besides Pitt, the film brings a fresh storyline to a played-out genre. It’s about Roy McBride (Pitt) and his mission across the solar system to find his missing father and information regarding the safety of the universe.
Release Date: September 19
‘JOKER’
Director by Todd Phillips
Starring Joaquin Phoenix
It’s obvious people have been excited for this one.
Ever since Christopher Nolan gave us one of the best trilogies ever in “The Dark Knight” series, fans everywhere have been itching for more Batman.
While “Joker” doesn’t exactly fill that want, it is a deep dive into the backstory of one of the most famous villains ever.
Why should you see it?
Besides the originality of a movie about the Joker’s backstory and how enticing the trailers have already looked, you should see this movie for Joaquin Phoenix.
After being nominated twice at the Oscars for Best Acting Performance in a Leading Role (“Walk the Line”, “The Master”), Phoenix has landed a gig that might get him his first statuette.
It will also be interesting to see how he handles the expectations of playing a notoriously challenging character and how he will live up to the precedent set by the most recent Joker, the late Heath Ledger.
Release Date: October 4
‘PARASITE’
Directed by Joon-ho Bong
Starring Kang-Ho Song
“Parasite” may not be on the watch list of casual moviegoers, but cinema junkies have been waiting for this one since it premiered at the Cannes film festival in May.
It is a film entirely in Korean, but that shouldn’t deter you from going to this in theaters.
Why should you see it?
“Parasite” made its debut at Cannes back in May and director Joon-ho Bong became the first Korea director to win the Palme d’Or (Cannes’ version of the best director award).
The film itself has received standing ovations at festivals across the world, has widespread positive reviews, and is one of the early favorites for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars.
You shouldn’t just see it for the hype, though.
It could be a great opportunity to experience foreign filmmaking at its finest, all the while culturing yourself a little bit.
Release Date: October 11 (Limited)
‘THE IRISHMEN’
Directed by Martin Scorsese
Starring Robert De Niro
“The Irishmen” has been one of 2019’s best-kept secrets until very recently, we still don’t know a whole lot about it. What we do know, however, gives cause to be very, very excited.
Why should you see it?
Martin Scorsese has been revered as one of the best directors of the twentieth century, possibly even one of the greatest of all time. From classics like “Taxi Driver” and “Goodfellas”, to newer box office hits like “Shutter Island” and “The Departed”, it seems that Scorsese has never made a film that is short of exceptional.
Throw his go-to leading man Robert De Niro in the mix with Al Pacino for a mobster movie, and you know it’s going to be good.
