Clevinger is a Padre, Marte is a Marlin and more
As the condensed MLB season enters its second half, teams are making moves with their roster to gear up for a postseason run. The MLB trade deadline is always full of fun and surprises, and this year was no exception.
One of the biggest moves from Monday’s deadline was the San Diego Padres move to acquire Cleveland Indians star pitcher Mike Clevinger. Clevinger has a 3.18 ERA with record of 1-1 on the season, and brings postseason experience to San Diego
The Indians received six players in the deal: RHP Cal Quantrill, LF Josh Naylor, C Austin Hedges, SS Gabriel Arias, LHP Joey Cantillo, and SS Owen Miller.
This is definitely a ‘win-now’ move for a Padres team that is scorching hot. With just a 60-sprint of a season, this is as good a year as any for a young team like the Padres to make a run at a championship.
The Indians get a large haul of players, and time will tell if a few of those guys can make in impact in Cleveland’s future.
The Mets did not stay quiet on Monday making a pair of deals. New York received reliever Miguel Castro from the Orioles for the young left-handed pitcher Kevin Smith, and catcher Robinson Chirinos and slugger Todd Frazier from the Rangers for players to be named later.
The Blue Jays made a trade with Diamondbacks for the veteran starting pitcher Robbie Ray. Ray is looking to bounce back with his new team in Toronto after a difficult season. In 31 innings Robbie Ray has a 7.84 ERA with 31 walks.
The Red Sox traded away veteran first baseman Mitch Moreland to San Diego for a couple minor leaguers. Moreland is batting .328 with 8 homers and an OPS of 1.177. The Red Sox received outfielder Jeisson Rosario and third baseman Hudson Potts.
The Colorado Rockies received veteran outfielder Kevin Pillar, also from the Boston Red Sox, in exchange for a player to be later named and international amateur signing-bonus pool space. Pillar batted .274 with the Red Sox this season including four bombs and 13 RBIs.
The Miami Marlins traded with the Diamondbacks to receive outfielder Starling Marte. Marte is having a nice year at the plate batting .311, and should bolster a Miami lineup that hopes to *gasp* contend for a playoff spot come seasons end.
