Men’s Golf Stays Hot with Second Place Finish in Throw Down “Up Top” Tournament

North Dakota State Men’s Golf headed down to Homer, Nebraska, to compete in the Throw Down “Up Top” tournament hosted by South Dakota. It was a three-day stay at the Landmand Golf Club, where the Bison played three rounds. NDSU would finish second with an even score of 876, besting host school South Dakota and in-state rival North Dakota. North Dakota State would finish second in total pars and fourth in total birdies on their way to their second-place finish. From the player’s standpoint, NDSU would dominate the top of the leaderboard with four out of seven golfers placing top fifteen on the leaderboard. Like the last tournament, North Dakota State would send two independent golfers. Max Wilson and Carter Spalding would be the two who would represent NDSU as independents.

Day One

On the first day in Homer, the Bison would show some struggles out of the gate, finishing 6th on the day 298(+6), leaving NDSU in the middle of the pack following the first 18. Leading North Dakota State on day one would be Rylin Petry, with a 72(-1). He would have four birdies and thirteen pars, but a double bogey on the 14th hole would raise his score by just a hair. Independent Max Wilson would shoot the same score as Petry with a 72(-1). Wilson would have four birdies, three bogeys, and eleven pars in an excellent debut for North Dakota State on the season. Ian Simonich would finish third for the Bison after the first 18; with an even 73, he shot four birdies, two bogeys, 11 pars, and, like Petry, a double bogey on the 14th hole. Next for the Bison would be Jake Skarperud and independent Carter Spalding, who tied with a 76(+3). Skarperud shot four birdies, eight pars, five bogeys, and a double bogey. While Spalding had two birdies, eleven pars, and five bogeys. Josh Galvin came 6th on day one with a 77(+4), one stroke behind Skarperud and Spalding. Galvin had three birdies, 11 pars, a pair of bogeys, and a pair of double bogeys. To wrap up day one, freshman Sean Moore would shoot 78(+5). He would end the first day with three birdies, nine pars, five bogeys, and a triple bogey on the second hole. Even with day one being the worst round for the Bison, they still showed a lot of flashes and a tight scorecard. NDSU would have 74 total pars.

Day Two

On the second day of the Throw Down “Up Top” tournament, North Dakota State would finish with the same score as the first day, 298(+6), but would climb to fourth overall in the tournament and tie for fourth on the day with UND. Josh Galvin would lead NDSU on day two. Improving his score to 72(-1), shooting six birdies, ten pars, a double bogey, and an unfortunate triple bogey.  Rylin Petry and Jake Skarperud would tie for second on the Bison leaderboard with a score of 75(+2). Petry shot four birdies, ten pars, two bogeys, a double bogey, and a triple bogey. Skarperud shot two birdies, 12 pars, and four bogeys. One stroke behind them was Ian Simonich, with a 76(+3). He shot two birdies, 11 pars, and five bogeys. Independent Max Wilson would shoot 78(+5) in his second round for the Bison. Wilson had three birdies, 11 pars, a single bogey, two double bogeys, and a triple bogey. Sean Moore would be one stroke behind him with a 79(+6). Spalding had an eagle on hole 11, along with two birdies, eight pars, four bogeys, a double bogey, and two triple bogeys. Day two was another show of consistency from the Bison as they climbed the leaderboards.

Day Three

The final day in Nebraska would be far and away NDSU’s best showing. The Bison as a team shot 280(-12), which would be good enough for second on the day and second total in the tournament. Leading North Dakota State in this stellar round was, once again, Josh Galvin. Galvin had a score of 69(-4) with seven birdies, nine pars, a single bogey and a double bogey. Galvin was tied for third place in the third round. Rylin Petry and Jake Skarperud were one stroke behind him, who once again tied but scored 70(-3). Petry and Skaperud shot five birdies, eleven pars, and two bogeys in his final 18. Behind them was Ian Simonich, who improved his score by shooting 71(-2) with four birdies, 12 pars, and two bogeys. Sean Moore would jump up the scoreboards with a 74(+10). Moore had an eagle on hole 15, two birdies, ten pars, and five bogeys to wrap his tournament up. Independents Carter Spalding and Max Wilson would finish things up for the Bison in Nebraska. Spalding shot 75(+2) with three birdies, ten pars and five bogeys.
