The end of 2016 — an eventful year, to be sure — is almost here. As we look forward to a new year, here are four movies that are scheduled for release in 2017. Set aside your Harambe memes and white Vans and grab the popcorn.
“Wonder Woman”
“Wonder Woman” is the fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe, a series of films incorporating storylines and characters from DC Comics.
In “Wonder Woman,” the Amazonian princess with superpowers is recruited to fight with the Allied powers in World War I after an American pilot crash-lands on her island. Gal Gadot, who plays the titular superheroine, has described her character as a woman whose central strength is her emotional intelligence.
“Wonder Woman” will be released in June.
“Star Wars: Episode VIII”
The eighth installment of the legendary Star Wars series and the second in the most recent trilogy will build on the cliffhanger that concluded 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
As with “The Force Awakens,” no official synopsis or plot information has been released, so we can only guess at what’s to come. We know it will include two familiar faces from the original trilogy: Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fischer as Leia Organa.
“Star Wars: Episode VIII” will be released in December.
“God Particle”
This sci-fi horror drama is directed by J.J. Abrams, director “Super 8” (2011) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015). In “God Particle,” a team of astronauts on a space station conduct an experiment that inadvertently causes the earth to vanish. Subsequently, the astronauts make a discovery that threatens their survival.
“God Particle” is the third installment in the Cloverfield series, following “Cloverfield” (2008) and “10 Cloverfield Lane” (2016). It will be released in February.
“Trainspotting 2”
“Trainspotting 2” is the sequel to the 1996 cult classic “Trainspotting,” which examines the lives of a group of Scottish heroin addicts. It includes the original cast and follows the characters 20 years after the events of the original film.
Reportedly, director Danny Boyle wanted to film a sequel earlier but chose to wait until the original cast members had aged visibly.
“Trainspotting 2” will be released worldwide in February.
