Bison soccer splits on Summit League road trip

The Herd sits in 7th as league play nears an end

The North Dakota State University soccer team (6-6-3, 2-3-0 Summit League) split a Summit League road trip over the weekend picking up a victory over the University of Missouri – Kansas City Roos 3 -1 on Friday and then dropped a 2 – 0 decision on Sunday at Oral Roberts University to the Golden Eagles. The split leaves the Bison on the outside looking in for the Summit League tournament. Currently sitting in 7th place, NDSU needs to finish no worse than sixth to qualify for the Summit League tournament which starts on October 28th.

@ Kansas City –

At Durwood Soccer Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., NDSU senior midfielder Lavin Douglass put the Herd ahead to stay late in the second half with her second goal of the season. At the 9:21 mark, Loretta Wacek put the Bison in front at 1-0, as she scored her third goal of the season and NDSU capitalized on a quick break to take an early lead.

Olivia Watson won the ball in the midfield and started a run into the Kansas City defensive zone. Watson then played a long through ball between the Kansas City backline to catch Wacek on the run, who then worked her way into the penalty area and fired a shot inside the right post, past a diving Roos netminder, Mackenzie Caldwell.

After the Roos tied it up at one apiece on Lily Stedman’s first goal of the year at the 76:39 mark, NDSU’s Lavin Douglass scored the game-winner. The senior midfielder put the Herd ahead to stay late in the second half with her second goal of the season. Douglass won possession in the offensive half and made a solo run at the Kansas City defense before fitting a left-footed shot into the top corner to give the Bison a 2-1 lead and eventual win.

Paige Goaley would seal the victory for the Bison as she won possession and made a long run before chipping it in from long range over the Kansas City keeper to give the Bison a multi-goal win for the second-straight game.

NDSU’s Abby Wilkinson would finish with three saves in the opening 45 minutes and five saves overall, for her 3rd win (3-6-2).

@ Oral Roberts –

At Case Soccer Complex in Tulsa, Okla., the Bison dropped a 2-0 decision to the Golden Eagles as they had several chances but could not get the ball into the Oral Roberts net save for a disallowed goal. NDSU managed just four shots on goal out of six shots total.

At the 56:14 mark, Alicia Nead put knocked a header into the Golden Eagle net, but the goal was disallowed by an offside call. The Bison also had a couple of shots go off the crossbar early in the second half.

Abby Wilkinson (3-7-2) would take the loss for the Bison.

Up next for the Herd will be a short road trip to take on in-state, and Summit League rival North Dakota on Sunday, October 16. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. against the Fighting Hawks at Bronson Field in Grand Forks.
