The NDSU baseball team took down the top team in college baseball, the Tennessee Volunteers, by a final score of 5-4 this past Friday. Sophomore catcher Noah Gordon delivered the final blow, hitting a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth.

The Vols jumped out to an early two-run lead after an early Andrew Fischer two-run home run in the top of the opening frame. Tennessee added another in the third with an RBI single off the bat of Hunter Ensley.

The Bison offense got off to a slow start, leaving six runners stranded in the first four innings, but the bats came alive in the fifth as Dante Jones put the Bison on the board with an RBI double to make it a 3-2 ball game. NDSU was able to tie the game in the sixth, with Colten Becker driving in a run with a double to the right-center gap. Tennessee took the lead right back in the eighth, with a run scoring after a Bison error.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth while trailing by one, the Bison were able to get two runners on after a single and a walk. Gordon came up with runners on the corners and worked an 11-pitch at-bat before delivering the game winner down the line in left field as the Bison move to 9-16 on the year.

Danny Lachenmayer got the start for the Bison, going 6 innings while giving up three earned runs while recording seven strikeouts to go with a walk. Landon Koenig got the last three innings, giving up one earned run with four strikeouts to keep the Vols at bay.

The Bison completed one of the biggest college upsets of the year by taking down the number one ranked team in college baseball. NDSU will try to keep the momentum as they head to Nebraska to take on Omaha in Summit League play this Friday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
