Short and Sweet | Sticking New Year’s Resolution(s)

Welcome to 2016, BisoNation.

As part of my New Year’s Resolution, I plan to write a weekly column published every Thursday called “Short and Sweet.” This is the first of my pieces, and it will be true to the title: long enough to get my point across but short enough to keep you interested.

With the New Year comes New Year’s resolutions.

Mine are to lose my newly-21-year-old-Blue-Moon-lover belly fat, read more books and put the people I care about first. If you don’t have any, I suggest you make some and write them down. Once things are in writing it’s much more serious and adult-like.

The following is a Top 3 list on how to stick to your New Year’s Resolution(s), with a small sports twist.

  1. Notice the (s) at the end of the title. I think it’s really important to take on only as much as you can handle. Like Jacksonville State University. You will never know what preparation went on behind closed doors, but it seemed to me they underestimated North Dakota State’s run game, Carson Wentz’s accuracy after being out 8 weeks, NDSU’s offensive line and defensive line, for example.
  1. Support each other because you aren’t the only one dying on the treadmill trying to lose 2015’s late-night mac n’ cheese. The men’s basketball team is also in an uphill battle at the moment, losing back-to-back conference games during the first week of the year. The team lost by 9 to University of Nebraska-Omaha, ending its 31-game winning streak at home before losing its second against Oral Roberts University 66-65. The first couple weeks of the year are the easiest, usually, in terms of school requirements, so put it in your planners to get to Scheel’s Arena to see the men play.
  1. Eat less. I certainly don’t mean less often, I just mean less in general. When you’re making the mac n’ cheese (although I suggest a granola bar instead) check out the serving size on the nutrition facts. You might be surprised that one box does not equal one serving.

Also, when you go to the Wallman Wellness Center in the morning, that doesn’t mean you can eat wings and spinach artichoke dip at Applebee’s later that night. If you want to lose weight you have to exercise and eat better.

And if you want to win, you have to play better.
