Although winter might be one of the most hated seasons—especially in the Midwest—it happens to be my favorite. Yes, there are blizzards and icy roads, and it’s sometimes hard to breathe when you walk outside for too long, but I think it’s important that we don’t get too hung up on all the negatives and instead decide to find joy in the things that this extremely chilly time of the year has to offer.
Winter fits
This is one of the biggest joys for me. Throughout the summer, I struggle to put a cool outfit together because I am unable to actually dress for the weather and feel cool at the same time. I have a very limited summer wardrobe that consists of one pair of dad shorts that I wear every single day with a different T-shirt. So when it starts to feel cold outside, you can bet that I am instantly going to get my layering pieces and pants out. You might make the point that I will indeed need to wear a large winter coat over my outfit which defeats the purpose of said cool outfit, but you are simply missing the point. I don’t need other people to think my outfits are cool. Simply having a cool outfit on makes me feel ten times better, so I will stand by point until I realize that I actually do want people to think I have cool outfits.
Getting cozy
This one might actually be the top reason I love winter so much. When it’s always dark and too cold to be outside, I love that it is finally socially acceptable for me to rot in my bed for hours with a good book, a new show or a movie I’ve watched a thousand times. I’m not the most outdoorsy person, so having permission to stay inside all day and have no one frown upon it is something that brings me a smile when I feel the cold begin to set in.
Hot chocolate
This one is self-explanatory. If you haven’t seen the movie “Polar Express” you should probably go watch it because it will change your outlook on hot chocolate. Yes, it is just warmed-up chocolate milk, and yes, sometimes it doesn’t taste that good, but it is truly the thought that counts here. I feel like it’s weird to have hot chocolate any other time than winter, so take advantage of this amazing time and make yourself a delicious (or not delicious) cup of hot chocolate and feel the cozy mood begin to set in.
Christmas
As a Christian, I absolutely love Christmas but for the reason that I get to celebrate the day when our Savior was born. But regardless of your beliefs, Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year. Getting together with family and friends to share love with one another through gifts and good conversations is so special. Not to mention all the amazing Christmas movies and music along with yummy desserts all the time. You really can’t hate the Christmas spirit.
Whether you dread winter or look forward to it every year, I encourage you to find the joys in it. It is going to be long so better to spend it happy.
