For the final tournament of the fall half of the 2024-2025 season, NDSU Men’s Golf headed south to San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico, to compete in the Monterrey Collegiate Classic. The Bison finished the first half strong with a dominating win over the twelve-team field, finishing with a team score of 838(-26) over the three-round event. NDSU finished the first round in second place at 280(-8). The Bison climbed to first place after the second round with the same team score of 280(-8), then sealed the deal with a tournament-best and one of the all-time best rounds in program history with a 278(-10) to secure a victory in Mexico. North Dakota State sent six golfers to Mexico with five team representatives and one independent golfer, Max Wilson. Four Bison would place in the top 14, and all Bison finished within the top 53 out of the 73 golfer pool.
Leading the way for NDSU in Mexico was Rylin Petry, with a career-best 207(-9). Petry shot three strong rounds of 70(-2)-67(-5)-70(-2), with his second-round score being good enough for him to finish second on the day. His total score saw him tie for seventh overall. Josh Galvin finished tied for 10th overall with a score of 209(-7). Galvin shot three rounds under par with a score of 69(-3) in the first round and 71(-1) in the second. Finally, he finished his fall season with a score of 69(-3). His tournament highlight was an eagle on the third hole in the final round. Tied for third for the Bison and tied for 14th overall were Ian Simonich and Jake Skarperud. The hometown-raised duo finished with a 211(-5) shared score. Skarperud shot an even 72 in the first round, two under with a 70 in the second round, then ended the tournament with a tournament low of 69(-3). His tournament highlight was his zero bogeys in the final round.
Simonich shot 69(-3) in the opening round, even at 72 in the second round, then ended the tournament at 70(-2). Simonich’s tournament highlight was his ten combined birdies throughout the event. Independent Max Wilson would finish tied 51st overall with a score of 223(+7). He started hot, shooting 71(-1) in the opening round, then finished with a 75(+3) in the second and a 77(+5) in the final round. Wilson’s highlight was his 35 pars. Finally, to wrap up the men’s first half was Gabe Benson. Benson shot 224(+8) to finish tied 53rd. He shot an opening 74(+2) and followed it up with two final rounds of 75(+3). Benson’s tournament highlight would be his five birdies in the final round.
North Dakota State ends an impressive opening half on an extremely high note with their win in Mexico. The Bison will head into the winter break with all eyes on the Loyola Intercollegiate in Arizona next February.
