This season for the Kansas City Chiefs has been the hardest of the Mahomes era as they have had to deal with a ton of inside and outside noise. However, they blocked it all out and got it done when it mattered as they defeated the San Fransisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 to claim the franchise’s fourth championship. They are the first team to win back-to-back championships since the New England Patriots of the early 2000s.

This game was one of the more hyped Super Bowls of all time as it was the powerhouse Niners against a Chiefs team that had been defying the odds all season as they were underdogs in their last two playoff wins over the Bills and Ravens. The first quarter of this game produced zero points, this was the 8th Super Bowl to produce no points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the 49ers could put some points on the board as a 55-yard Jake Moody field goal put the Niners up 3-0. Moody’s field goal broke the record for the longest in Super Bowl history surpassing Bills kicker Steve Christie who booted a 54-yarder against the Cowboys in Super Bowl 28. Later in the quarter, the 49ers dug deep into their bag of tricks as from the Kansas City 21-yard line Brock Prudy threw a pass to Jauan Jennings who then threw it back across the field to Christian McCaffrey who had an escort to the endzone to put the Niners up 10-0. Kansas City would score a late field goal to avoid getting shutout in the first half falling behind 10-3 at the break. That was key as no team has ever been shut out in the first half of the big game and then come back to win.

Following a halftime performance by Usher, the Chiefs showed how a champion responds as they shut out the Niners 10-0. They started their scoring by breaking Jake Moody’s field goal record as Harrison Butker hit a 57-yard field goal to cut the deficit to four. Later in the quarter and after a Niners muffed punt the Chiefs found the endzone as Mahomes hooked up with Marquez Valdes-Scantling to give Kansas City a 13-10 lead.

The fourth quarter started fast as Brock Purdy found Jauan Jennings to regain the lead 16-13. The Chiefs and 49ers would kick field goals for the rest of regulation which means for the first time since the Patriots came back from a 28-3 deficit in Super Bowl 51 we would have overtime on the game’s biggest stage. In the extra period, the 49ers won the toss and elected to play offense. Their drive in overtime ended with a Jake Moody field goal to put the Niners up 22-19. The Cheifs responded by going on a championship march, 13 plays,75 yards, 7:19 off the clock, and a Mahomes to Mecole Hardman touchdown gave the Chiefs the 25-22 win.

The Chiefs are officially the new dynasty and as much as people may dislike them, you have to admire how well they play as a team. You also have to admire how Patrick Mahomes can defy all the odds and continue to be this generation’s version of Tom Brady. The only thing left for Mahomes and Co. to do is win a third championship in a row as nobody has been able to pull that off. Teams like the ‘74 Dolphins, ‘90 49ers, and ‘05 Patriots all fell short, can the Chiefs become the first?
