Hamling leads Bison with double-digit performances
NDSU fell short to South Dakota at The SHAC on Thursday night, 78-59.
NDSU opened the game with six straight points to take a 6-0 lead. With 2:42 left in the first period, the Coyotes (17-4, 10-0 Summit) were able to claw their way back and take their first lead of the night, 14-13 which turned into a 19-16 lead after the first quarter. The Coyotes, who were ranked No. 7 in the Mid-Major Top 25 Poll this week, began the second frame with eight unanswered points to extend their lead into double digits, 27-16, at the 8:03 mark. South Dakota led at the intermission, 40-29.
Heaven Hamling had a team-high 14 points on 4-of-7 three-point shooting to lead the Bison (8-12, 4-6 Summit). Abby Schulte finished with a season-high 12 points and a season-high six free throws on eight tries, tying a season-high. Ryan Cobbins and Olivia Skibiel each scored eight points.
South Dakota’s undefeated streak, which now stands at 16-0, is the longest active win streak in Division-I college women’s basketball. Chloe Lamb, a redshirt senior, led South Dakota to victory over NDSU. Lamb scored 21 points on 8-2 (FG), 2-7 (3PT), and 3-3 shooting (FT).
WBB vs. Jackrabbits
On Saturday night at Scheels Center, the North Dakota State women’s basketball team (8-13, 4-7 Summit League) was defeated 76-60 by South Dakota State (14-8, 10-1 Summit League).
Heaven Hamling led the Bison (8-13, 4-7 Summit) in scoring with 13 points on 3-of-6 three-point shooting. Her stat line also included four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. With 11 points, Emily Dietz scored in double figures for the eighth time this season and the 50th time in her career.
By the 8:31 mark of the second quarter, the Jackrabbits had built a 10-point lead, 19-9, and led 35-25 at halftime. In the first half, the Bison hit seven triples, with Hamling and Reneya Hopkins both hitting two. SDSU, which entered the week ranked No. 20 in the Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, developed its greatest lead of the game, 76-51, with 3:12 to play in the second half. The Jackrabbits held on for a 76-60 triumph in the final minutes.
On Thursday, NDSU will travel to Omaha (6-14, 2-9 Summit) for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
