State of college football

Here’s where the teams stand at the midway point

College football has finished its sixth week. The pretenders and contenders are becoming clearer and clearer. Every week, the Associate Press (AP) poll gets the opinions of 65 writers and broadcasters from across the country to see who they think is the best.

The week 7 poll has come out, and while the top six has stayed relatively the same, there has been lots of movement near the bottom for a multitude of reasons.

Starting with the top six, we see Alabama and Clemson. Alabama has stayed in first for its second week in the row after passing Clemson two weeks ago. Alabama’s quarterback Tua Tagovaila is looking every bit like a 1st round pick.

In third place, there’s a surprise tie. One of the two teams is Georgia, who’s been sitting in at third since the beginning of the season. The surprise is the second team joining them, Ohio State. The Buckeyes and their first year coach Ryan Day has been on a steady climb since week 4, starting at sixth, and now at third.

Rounding out the top six are LSU in fifth and Oklahoma in sixth. In seventh, is a team that had a major jump this past week, the Florida Gators. This jump is coming after their upset over the previous number seven, Auburn.

Sitting in eighth is Wisconsin. Wisconsin has held the position for the past three weeks after their stellar climb from 19th.

Notre Dame has returned to ninth, the position they started the season at, and Penn State follows them in tenth. Penn State made a nice jump from 12th place this week after they crushed Perdue 35-7.

Texas is sitting at 11th for the third week in a row, and behind them is the aforementioned Auburn. 13th and 14th are held by Oregon and Boise State respectively. 15th is a place has changed has once again. In week 5, it was held by California and Washington in week 6 who both fell off the list completely. This week though, the position is held by Utah who has had a roller coaster so far this season. They’ve never stayed in the same position for more than one week and have gone from 14thall the way up to 10th and even down to 19th.

Michigan is sitting at moved up three spots to 16th after a 10-3 win over Iowa, and Iowa now sits beneath them at 17th, dropping three positions themselves.

18th is held by Arizona State who joined the list last week. They took UCF’s spot, who dropped off the list. Behind them is Wake Forest, Virginia and SMU respectively. All three shifted up three spots.

Following in 22nd is a newcomer to the list, Baylor. Baylor is coming fresh off of a win against Kansas State, who was previously ranked 24th in week 5.

Another newcomer, Memphis, sits at 23rd. Memphis finds their spot after beating unranked LA-Monroe 52-33.

Rounding off the list in 24th and 25th are Texas A&M and Cincinnati. Texas A&M has had a wild ride this season, starting at 12th and eventually dropping to 25th in week 6 after losses to Clemson and Auburn. However, their 31-27 win over Arkansas last week is keeping afloat and preventing them from completely dropping off.

As mentioned before, the list is capped off with Cincinnati. They made their way onto the list in headline fashion when they beat number 18 UCF.

Some of the honorable mentions for the list include Minnesota, Missouri, Appalachian State and Washington.

While the bottom 15 positions of this list have seen lots of movement and excitement, the top positions haven’t seen much budge. It’s easy to see that college football’s ‘predictable’ trend is going to continue.
