On Oct. 14, after 11 years of service to the university, President Joe Chapman submitted his letter of resignation. Although he left NDSU abruptly, Chapman made  progress during his term by helping the university achieve Division I status and increasing student enrollment to over 14,000 students.

 

Minard crumbles

A portion of Minard Hall’s northwest wall collapsed on Sunday, Dec. 27, between the hours of midnight and 3 a.m. The incident occurred during the semester break, and no one was inside the building during the collapse. Excavation activity was going on next to the building and was the suspected reason for the incident.

 

NDSU students caught in Best Buy scandal

Best Buy charged three current and former NDSU football players with theft in April. Nine others were also charged including three current NDSU students, four former NDSU students, one MSUM student and one non-affiliated male. Authorities estimate merchandise worth over $150,000 was stolen from the store during the months of September and February.


President’s house

Last fall, the new president’s house reached completion. The project was initially approved and priced out at $900,000. The budget was increased substantially during the process and the reported final costs totaled approximately $2.2 million.


NDSU campus becomes smoke-free

On March 1, NDSU adopted a “No Smoking” policy on its campus, banning all students, faculty and staff from smoking on its property. Previously the university had enforced a policy that allowed smoking 50 feet from all buildings, but a vote on campus determined the new policy being put in place.


The Swine Flu

The Student Health Center had a wave of incoming patients due to the high number of reported H1N1 cases in the fall. Staying healthy and “swine” free was a top priority for both students and staff.


Barry Hall opens

NDSU’s downtown campus welcomed Barry Hall this fall. The 135,000-square-foot building is home to NDSU’s business school. Some of its features include 12 conference rooms, a two-story atrium, 11 classrooms and a 250-seat auditorium.


BIN

Bison Information Network launched the student-run television newscasts and can be viewed on Fargo’s public access channel. The BIN has been working the past year on taping and broadcasting campus-oriented entertainment such as Coaches Corner, which features interviews with the coaches of NDSU.


Female golfer makes groundbreaking strokes

NDSU golfer Amy Anderson has etched her name into the NDSU record books, after only one year on campus. Anderson set the record for most wins in a season with five and most victories by a single golfer at NDSU with five, including a second place finish in the Summit League Tournament, before she received a bid to the NCAA tournament.


Next year’s student leaders elected

On Wednesday, April 7, students elected Kevin Black to be Student Body President and Shawn Affolter as Vice President. Black and Affolter won the election with a 547 vote lead.
