Intricate straps, mesh panels, printed leggings, racerfront tops and motivational text are just a few activewear trends you can try for your next workout.

In January, a new crop of hopefuls resolves to frequent the gym and get in shape. They fill the Wellness Center for the first few weeks of the semester only to slowly dwindle away as they lose motivation and get busy with other things.

Once the new goal stops being exciting and starts to feel like too much of a commitment, you need something to give you that extra push and get you looking forward to working out again. Just like a new outfit can make you excited to go out on Friday night, the latest activewear trends can get you pumped to hit the gym. From detailed straps to mesh panels, there are plenty of current trends that will encourage you to get your booty back to the Wellness Center.

Basic sports bras get an update with criss-crossing straps and cage-like details. When worn under a tank with thin strap detailing, the look is even cooler. Crossed straps are more often seen in intricate twists and cutouts as back detailing, but they can add an unexpected touch to sports bra fronts as well. The trend has also made its way down to performance leggings with latticing details at the ankles or even the hips, if you’re daring enough.

Mesh panels add edge and interest to basic leggings. Fashion marries function with this trend. It’s perfect for a fitness class like barre, for those of you interested in ballet, or for high intensity interval training, where your clothes need to be fitted, breathable and nonrestrictive. The mesh provides ventilation but also evokes a tough femininity when used to strategically reveal areas of skin with artistic design details. Street-inspired semi-sheer panels of power mesh are also showing up on T-shirts, tanks, sports bras and jackets.

Printed leggings are a favorite for yoga and cycling because they stretch every way your body does and never get in the way of movements. All-over prints on leggings and sports bras aren’t going anywhere, but color blocking is about to blow up. Graphic blocks of color and geometric paneling from thick diagonal blocks across legs to vertical stripes down the sides of leggings are bold and slimming. Motivational “fitspiration” phrases printed on calves in simple, strong typeface are another upcoming performance legging trend that sends a straightforward message about your fitness goals.

Racerfront tanks are replacing racerback tanks. The modern cut with a high neckline and armholes that cut inward highlight toned shoulders. No matter the style, choosing a top in a moisture wicking fabric is always a good idea because the fabric pulls sweat away from your body to keep you cool and comfortable. Another trendy top option is a boxy-cropped hoodie. They’re sporty and super comfortable: perfect for breaking a sweat in Zumba class.

Maybe you’re training to run the Fargo marathon, or maybe you’re just trying to get through yoga sculpt without having to drop your five pound weights. Wherever you’re at with your fitness goals, you can bring a little more fun and variety to your workouts with some fashionable activewear updates. If you have a fun outfit that makes you feel confident at the gym, you’re much more likely to get off the couch and get moving, meaning you’ll look even better in those high-waisted mesh side panel leggings.
