Assault On Campus is ‘Isolated Event’

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Saturday an assault occurred on the 1100 Block of College Street on the south side of the North Dakota State campus.

An NDSU student was walking north heading toward campus when the student was followed by a group of two or three men.

When the victim crossed over onto campus was when the incident became a campus issue.

As the victim attempted to call police, his cell phone was knocked from his hand and he was assaulted with a punch to the head.

Shortly following the incident perpetrators fled south and the victim was able to make contact with the police.

The University Police and Safety Office at press time said it believes that this is an isolated event, and have seen no prior patterns.

William Vandal, UPSO chief, said that this is not a common occurrence on campus. Vandal said NDSU is a consistently a safe campus with very little fluctuation in the numbers of crime incidents that are recorded in the annual security report.

While the police do not currently have any suspects, they said the description of the perpetrators is being continuously worked on and will be helpful in pinpointing the perpetrators.

The UPSO said there are several officers who are working on the case.

If any students have any information regarding this incident, the UPSO has a text-a-tip line at  701-526-6006.

The UPSO currently have a cellphone application available to students called Pathlight which will silently alert police of your location if you feel threatened. The UPSO also offers a safety escort service to locations and facilities adjacent to campus. For this service, call 701-231-8998.

Around campus there are also blue posts with emergency buttons located on them. The UPSO is notified when these buttons are pushed and respond to the location.

Campus safety has also had some recent adjustments that were initiated during a safety walk that included student government to ensure safety on campus. Participants on the walk discovered that one area that could use improvement was the lighting on campus. For these reasons, new LED lamp posts were installed around campus.
