Annual Bridge Building Comes to Fargo

North Dakota State’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting the ASCE Midwest Regional Student Conference and Steel Bridge Competition this year.

The competition features schools throughout the Midwest competing to assemble a 20-foot bridge which that a seven foot river as quickly and efficiently as possible. Teams are deducted points for penalties such as dropping tools, nuts and bolts, which represent pollution in the game.

Event attendees also can attend two groups of technical speaker presentations, a banquet and an awards show.

The annual conference and competition rotates between Midwestern schools on an eight-year-long rotation, with 2017 being NDSU’s turn to host the event.

NDSU has won the national competition six times, in 1995, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010. The university has the most wins at the national level out of any school in the nation.

The competition and conference is hosted Thursday through Saturday.

Those with any questions can contact Dylan Dunn, NDSU’s student contact for the event.

Dunn was unable to be reached for further comment at press time.
